How the "nearest station" search works

When you tap "Allow location" your browser shares your latitude and longitude with this page. We send those coordinates to our backend, which queries the database for stations within your chosen radius and returns them sorted by distance. The API route is excluded from our origin access log, and the coordinates are not saved in our application database or associated with an account or profile. If you prefer not to share GPS, you can search by Winnipeg postal code instead; we map the first three characters (the forward sortation area) to a representative point and search from there.

How wide a radius makes sense in Winnipeg depends on where you are. The downtown core is the thin spot: station corners have mostly been redeveloped, so from the Exchange District or Osborne Village you'll often be routed a few minutes out to the nearest arterial. Along the city's real gas corridors — Pembina Highway, McPhillips Street, Regent Avenue, St. Mary's Road, Portage Avenue West — a 3–5 km radius usually surfaces half a dozen options. Near the big retail nodes (Polo Park, Garden City, St. Vital Centre, Kenaston) the discount operators — Costco, Red River Co-op, Canadian Tire Gas+ and the Mobil-branded Superstore pumps — come into range, so a slightly wider search often finds a meaningfully cheaper price.

Nearest is not always cheapest

The list below is sorted by distance by default, but each card shows the regular price too. Two things to keep in mind:

  • Routine fill-ups should optimise for time, not pennies. If you fill up twice a month on your commute home, the closest station on your route wins almost every time. Shaving 3¢/L on a 45-litre tank is $1.35 — not worth a 15-minute detour across the city in rush-hour traffic.
  • Long-trip fill-ups should optimise for price. Heading to the lake, out the Trans-Canada toward Kenora or Brandon, or south to the border? Top up at the cheapest station you can find before leaving the city. Highway and cottage-country gas often runs well above the best Winnipeg price, and you'll burn more fuel on the trip than on a commute.
  • Watch the brand pattern. The Costco gas bars are usually the cheapest pumps in the city (membership required), with Red River Co-op close behind once member equity is counted. Domo, Canadian Tire Gas+ and the Mobil-branded Superstore pumps also price aggressively to draw traffic away from Shell, Esso, and Petro-Canada.

You can refine the list using the distance and maximum price filters once your location loads. As with the cheapest-today page, prices come from a feed that refreshes hourly, so confirm the pump display before you start fuelling.
